so, the p.AI.nter got an update

i’ve got a handful of thoughts about it in relation to us, or the player, along with where i’m hoping the direction will go for further interactions

before we start, i’m sorry to those who had liked or reblogged my post with my image of the consequences with p.AI.nter—i apologize! i’ve realized recently the direction i wish my blog to go. i have already made decisions i am not proud of, simply posting for content, which isn’t what i desire for this blog. that being said, i have a post planned after this one, which is my own thoughts, but isn’t pressure related. that out of the way;

i find the p.AI.nter’s voicelines and overall goal very interesting. it seems its constantly in a battle of sympathizing for the player and also fighting for its own survival—a voiceline you can receive from it through good people is “ this way! no, no, i meant the other door! “ which is sweet, honestly. to have someone care for us in a human way, ironically a robot, feels endearing as we have no one else besides other players. but, another one you can receive is “ you are so goddamn gullible. “ i don’t view this a conflict of portrayal, but rather, human complexity. the only character we have so far that understands we are equals, our situations are just different sides of the fence, is someone who had to learn to feel rather than someone who has always felt.

that being said, that’s what i want to see honed in on for the further updates and characterization for the p.AI.nter. let me introduce to you a character who shares similar motifs, from a different game—another character, often referred to as the painter, but canonically called the unfinished boss from inscryption.

the gameplay doesn’t really matter, and neither does knowing the story for this. but what you do need to know is that this boss is as its says on the tin—it’s unfinished. but, instead of our main antagonist taking care of and finishing this boss, as it has made all other bosses in this section, it allows US to finish it.

we give it a face. each boss is split into two sections, phases, and we are allowed to create rules for this boss in each phase; all using presets, but still. we’re making this boss. and there’s an almost uncomfortable, pitiful desperation in its dialogue as it pleads with us to help finish its life, to create it. to give it look and meaning. when we give it a face, it says “ i feel as though i can breathe now. “ it’s a robot, it can’t actually breathe, but we made it. it is a product of our creation, and we gave it meaning and existence. even as we’re destroying it, it’s grateful for this gift of life. it feels less like we’re just picking off another enemy and more so as if we’re robbing what we just gave our indirect child—we gave it breath, and now, we take it away.

i want to see this flipped on its head, twisted in the eyes of the p.AI.nter. art is a penultimate form of expression, perhaps we could destroy the only medium it has to feel, to seem alive. it worked so hard for this and we—humans who crafted it for our own wants—are ripping it from it. or it does the opposite. in a moment of desperation, it destroys our only method of freedom and escape—what humans essentially did to it, condemning it to mining and now, to the blacksite.

or, instead of us humans giving life to the p.AI.nter, it helps humanize us. it is machine creating man, not the other way around. through its art we are more expressive and through its compassion we are humanized in a way no one else is willing to do. we are seen as expendable, less than nothing, worthless ants and cockroaches thrown to mantises, and the one thing that brings us emotion isn’t even human. you could argue that part of this is happening now, and i would agree, but i want to see it taken even further. i want our hearts ripped out, essentially.

i can’t wait to see more with this funky computer.
